projects each year — portraits, murals, and work at architectural scale.

U.S. Embassy Ottawa, President Obama's Second Inauguration
Oil on canvas (mural) · 108 × 84 in · U.S. Consulate, Vancouver, 2013
Painted on the artist's own initiative, the monumental portrait drew the
attention of people connected with the Obama campaign — and an invitation
from U.S. Consul General Anne Callaghan to present the work at the
Consulate in Vancouver, in celebration of President Obama's second
inauguration. It hung there for several months, and remains in the
artist's collection.
Vancouver Canucks — Black History Month jersey
2023 · NHL
Design of the Canucks' special-edition warm-up jerseys: the orca
re-imagined through Ethiopian colour, pattern and textile design, with
Ge'ez numbering and Genna-stick shoulder patches.
Georges St-Pierre — one of the most celebrated Canadian athletes of all
time — was an inspiration behind Yared's fighter series years before this
commission. The finished portrait was presented to St-Pierre in person at
the Daily Hive studio in Vancouver, at a meeting organized by a journalist
friend of the artist: a conversation in French, stories and laughter. The
work now hangs in the athlete's private collection.
With Daniel Lanois — music & visual art
October 2023 · Los Angeles
An invitation from Daniel Lanois — the legendary Canadian producer
behind records with U2, Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel and Leonard Cohen — to
join him in Los Angeles for a creative exchange: a mentorship, and an
immersion in one another's process. The meeting followed Lanois'
photography exhibit at the Solstice Gallery in Mill Valley, California —
two artists exploring the shared ground of music and painting, from
Ethiopia to Quebec.
The exchange became a working one: canvases laid out and painted under
the arches of Lanois' home, where the music lives.
Canadian Commission for UNESCO
March 2023 · International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination
For March 21, the Canadian Commission for UNESCO featured Yared's
perspective as an artist — his Ethiopian-Canadian heritage and the design
thinking behind the Canucks' Black History Month jersey — in a video piece
marking the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
